The Effect of the Profitability of Public Medical Institutions on Medical Performance

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out any policy implications in order to continuously improve the medical performance of public medical institutions by checking the effect of the profitability of public medical institutions on medical performance. From the results of recent related precedent studies, it can be assumed that medical performance may be high in the case of high－profit medical institutions. In other words, if the basis for the expansion of the medical service and improvement of the medical performance through the enhancement of the profitability of public medical institutions is established, it is expected that more pro－longed and stable medical service will be provided and also the medical performance can be improved. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of the profitability of public medical institutions on medical performance and studies how the profitability of public medical institutions affects medical performance. For the analysis of this study, seven－year data of a total of 71 medical institutions classified into domestic public were investigated and used regression analysis and t－test. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the higher the profitability, the better medical performance, and also the profitability could have a positive effect on medical performance. The contributions of this study are, first, it was found that in case of non－profit public medical institutions, the profitability positively affects the medical performance through analysis. Unlike the general expectation that the profitability has nothing to do with medical performance, if the higher profitability can be made despite non－profitable, the finances for improved medical performance can be provided. Second, it analyzed the profitability of public medical institutions and medical performance by using finance and non－finance materials in our country where the purpose of public medical is important. The last, it provided the accounting staff of public medical institutions operated by central and local government some policy implications that medical performance can be improved through profitability improvement. Therefore, if the profitability of public medical institutions improves, the medical performance of public medical institutions can be expected to further improve.
